Not long ago, Hedi Slimane presented the first half of his women’s FW16-17 collection in Los Angeles at none other than the Palladium itself. This comes as no surprise when considering while Slimane is not directing one of the most influential Parisian houses in the world, he’s often photographing young, indie musicians in the City of Angels. What location could be more fitting than a renowned music venue for a man whose collections incessantly draw upon the energy of young rock and roll?
Just this past week, Slimane showed the second half of his offerings in Paris. While the latter definitely still incorporated those same rock elements, little else could be said in regards to familiarity between the two shows. While the LA show was more of a spectacle of sorts with celebrities from Justin Bieber to Lady Gaga front row, the Paris showing was much more subtle. There was no music or celebrities on skateboards, just fine clothes. Sleek cocktail dresses cut with deep necklines and side-bows were paired with wide belts, oversized buckles and all. Star spangled leather moto jackets kept the cinched fit and flare polka dot dresses cool yet refined. In typical Hedi fashion, eyes were kept dark and lips bright red. This was definitely a different Saint Laurent. Now the question remains: is this Hedi’s farewell to Yves, or the beginning of a promise to reinstitute haute couture to the house?
