WHAT WE LOVE AT THIS VERY MOMENT! OUR SILK EMBROIDERED TAPESTRY.
There is so much that we love here at the studio, but this one is a winner! This is an English silk embroidered tapestry that we found on London’s Portobello Road. Portobello Road is an antique and vintage market located in the vibrant Notting Hill district of West London within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. We purchased it from an antique dealer who was selling out of the booth of his car. The tapestry is all hand-embroidered with silk thread. It was folded when we purchased it; therefore, the color was still vibrant, as it had never been hung. The scene depicts Diana, the ancient Roman Goddess of the hunt, wild animals, and the forest, the Roman equivalent of the Greek goddess Artemis. She is usually depicted as a youthful huntress carrying a bow and a quiver, accompanied by a hound and a deer. In this case, she’s accompanied by other figures with hunting dogs and a deer at a riverbank. A courtly figure is seen in the distance with Roman arches. This fantastic piece measures 109 inches by 115 inches. I personally mounted it onto canvas and attached it to a wooden frame. It hung in my home for many years, and it’s time to find it a new home.
